Eyelid Surgery
The eyes can reveal much about our thoughts and emotions and they can also be the first sign of the cruel hand of age. Many patients visit Mr Afshin Yousefpour’s cosmetic surgery clinic complaining that hooded, wrinkled upper eyelids, hollow dark circles or puffy eye bags, are making them look old before their time.
Am I a good candidate for eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery is a highly popular procedure with men and women that have seen changes to the eye area, either on the upper or lower lid or both. As we age, the skin becomes less elastic and starts to wrinkle and fold, particularly on the upper eyelid, and that hooded appearance can make them look tired, old and cross. Many women find they are unable to apply make-up as easily and some patients can even find their vision can become affected.
The eyelid surgery consultation
During your eyelid surgery consultation, Mr Afshin Yousefpour will listen carefully to your concerns and expectations from surgery. He will then be able to assess the eye area. Sometimes, hooding and wrinkling on the upper lids is due to a sagging brow and you will benefit more from a brow lift rather than eyelid surgery. Depending on the nature of the problem, Mr Yousefpour can then explain which procedure or combination of procedures is best for you and he will detail all the potential complications as well as the benefits, so you can make an informed decision about your treatment. Are there any risks and complications?
Risks associated with a blepharoplasty can include blurred vision, dry eyes or over-production of tears, although these complications should be temporary. The eye area may feel tight and swollen initially, but swelling should ease after two weeks. The skin is very thin on the eyelids so scarring usually heals very well. Most patients are able to resume normal activities or return to work in a week to ten days. What results can I expect from eyelid surgery?
Mr Yousefpour is careful not to remove too much fat or it will create a hollow look under the eye which looks unnatural. An upper or lower eyelid lift can have a dramatic rejuvenating effect and transform the face, giving you a fresher, younger look.
What does eyelid surgery involve?
Eyelid surgery is usually performed under a local anaesthetic combined with sedation and generally takes two to two and a half hours to perform. You may require an overnight stay, but most patients are able to go home the same day.
During upper eyelid surgery, Mr Yousefpour will make an incision along the eyelid crease, usually where the scar will be hidden by the natural folds of the eye afterwards. The eyelid crease can be restored by removing a small amount of the muscle and then any excess fat or skin is removed.
There are two accepted approaches to a lower eyelid lift; Mr Yousefpour will either make an incision externally, just under the lower lash line, or it is possible to go from behind the eyelid using an approach called a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. The benefit of this technique is that it leaves no visible scars.
