Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, known as nose reshaping surgery or a nose job, is a surgical procedure that reshapes the external appearance of the nose. The internal function of the nose is also assessed and operated on if necessary, to relieve any blockages.
Am I a good candidate for a Rhinoplasty?
If the nose is out of balance with the rest of your facial features, then it can be a cause of distress and greatly affect your self-confidence. Changes to the appearance of the nose, either through trauma, injury or illness, may also benefit from correction. Often external deformities in the nose can reflect internal problems that affect the function of the nose and can cause breathing problems. Mr Yousefpour is able to make a number of changes to the appearance of the nose, from correcting lumps and bumps, straightening the bridge of the nose, changing the tip, the size and/or shape of the nostrils and even altering the angle that the nose projects from the face. The Rhinoplasty consultation
During your rhinoplasty consultation, Mr Yousefpour will listen carefully to your concerns and discuss what changes you are hoping to see. It is important that you are able to articulate this clearly and that your expectations from surgery are realistic, as a rhinoplasty procedure can make a marked difference to your facial appearance. He will also examine the nose carefully to ensure that the nose is functioning normally and there are no internal blockages that should be removed. If the septum of the nose, which is the line of cartilage that separates the two nasal cavities, is bent or deviated then it can affect the patient’s ability to breath normally. The procedure to correct this is called a septoplasty and when it is combined with a cosmetic improvement to the nose, can be termed a septo-rhinoplasty. Mr Yousefpour will then run through all potential risk and complications as well as the benefits of undergoing surgery so you can make an informed decision about whether to go ahead. Are there any risks or complications?
There is usually less bruising after a rhinoplasty procedure that people expect and it should resolve within a couple of weeks. Swelling of the nose can take up to six months to fully disappear when you’ll be able to assess the final results of your rhinoplasty procedure. Any discomfort can usually be controlled with over-the-counter painkillers. Most patients find they are happy to return to work within a couple of weeks and can resume more vigorous activities after four to six weeks, depending on Mr Yousefpour’s advice. Occasionally, there may be excessive bleeding after a rhinoplasty procedure and the nose may need to be packed with gauze to stop the bleeding. Potential risks include infections, nerve damage and asymmetries. What does a Rhinoplasty procedure involve?
Depending on which technique(s) are being used, your rhinoplasty procedure may be performed either under a local anaesthetic with sedation or a general anaesthetic. It can take between one and two hours depending on what changes have been planned.
Mr Yousefpour will perform either an open or closed rhinoplasty. In the latter, incisions are made inside the nostrils. This avoids visible scarring, but for more complex procedures it may be necessary to perform an open rhinoplasty, where an incision is made between the nostrils so that the length of the nose can be accessed. However, the scar between the nostrils is not usually visible when healed.
What results can I expect from my Rhinoplasty?
Occasionally, patients may require a repeat procedure to ensure the optimum results, but this possibility will have been discussed in full beforehand.
With realistic expectations, a cosmetic rhinoplasty can be a highly satisfactory procedure that can greatly improve self-confidence.
