Dental Implants
Dental implants are a form of restorative dentistry and they are used to support one or more false teeth, in the form of dentures, crowns and bridges, by implanting a titanium screw into the jawbone that acts like a tooth root.
Am I a good candidate for dental implants?
Patients that require either a full or partial set of dentures often worry that they will be unstable leaving them self-conscious. Dental implants are a totally secure and long-lasting option and a single implant can support one or more replacement teeth.
Mr Afshin Yousefpour will assess the shape and thickness of the bone that will support these implants with either x-rays and CT scans and it may be necessary to perform a bone graft first.
He will then advise you on every aspect of the dental implant procedure, including benefits, risks and what the alternatives are, so you can make an informed decision.
What does a dental implants procedure involve?
The procedures is performed under a local anaesthetic and there should be no pain during the procedure, but if you are very nervous about undergoing dental treatment then a sedative can be used. Very rarely, a general anaesthetic may be used. There may be some discomfort afterwards but this should be easily controlled with over-the-counter painkillers.
A dental implant is a titanium rod fitted into your jawbone. It has a screw or clip above the gum line called an abutment that will hold the false tooth in place. Your dental implant procedure is performed in a number of stages and the false teeth will be fitted at least three months after the implants are placed. During the intervening period the bone in the jaw grows around and fuses to the implants making them completely secure and stable. You may be fitted with a temporary denture during this time.
Are there any risks and complications?
On rare occasions, the implant does not fuse with the bone properly and may become loose during the healing period. The implant can be removed and the jaw left to heal. Another implant may then be placed or a bone graft performed. Alternatively, a bridge can be used, fitted to the implants that have been successful.
Smoking can affect the treatment outcome so you’ll be advised to give up smoking if you’re planning dental implant treatment.
Risks include swelling at the site where the implant has been fixed. Infections can occur and you may be given at anti-bacterial mouthwash to use in the period after the implants are placed. Excessive bleeding can occur immediately after treatment.
Important facial nerves are present in the lower jaw and damage to these nerves can cause loss of sensation or a tingling feeling that can be uncomfortable, but this should be temporary.
