Botox
Botox, medically known as botulinum toxin, is a naturally-occurring protein that has been discovered to have powerful muscle relaxing abilities. Dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by the contraction and relaxation of the muscles underlying the skin, respond particularly well to Botox.
Am I a good candidate for Botox?
Any wrinkles that are the result of normal facial movement can be treated with Botox. This is particularly true for the upper third of the face, particularly the crows feet around the eyes, the frown lines between the eyes known as the glabellar lines and the horizontal lines that form across the forehead.
Some practitioners use Botox to achieve other effects such as reducing a square jaw, smoothing the vertical bands on the neck or providing a small lift in the brow area by raising the eyebrows slightly, but it is important that you check how much experience your practitioner has in providing these treatments.
Botox is unable to treat lines that are caused by loss of volume and sagging skin or wrinkles that are a result of sun and environmental damage to the skin.
The Botox consultation
During your consultation, Mr Afshin Yousefpour will listen carefully to your concerns and what you’re hoping to achieve and if Botox can deliver the results you’re expecting he can advise you accordingly. Alternatively, you may be better suited to another procedure, either surgical or non-surgical.
He will also carefully explain what are the possible risks of a Botox treatment as well as its benefits so you can make an informed choice about whether to proceed with the procedure. Mr Yousefpour will then take a medical history to ensure there is no medical reason why you can not undergo a Botox treatment.
Although Botox is not thought to travel from the injection site, it is not to be used in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Conditions that affect muscle activity, such as Bell’s Palsy, bleeding disorders or medications that affect bleeding may also prohibit you from undergoing treatment.
What does a Botox procedure involve?
A Botox treatment is typically very quick to perform and you’ll be able to resume normal activities immediately with no one the wiser. The area will be cleaned of all products with an antiseptic wipe and most patients do not require a local anaesthetic to be applied to the skin in advance of the treatment, although that can be done if required. Minute amounts of Botox are then injected into several sites in the treatment area.
What results can I expect from Botox?
It typically takes five to seven days for the Botox to start working, as it takes this time for the nerves to stop sending signals to the muscles. You will then be able to see the full results.
Each patient responds differently and it also depends on the area of the face that has been treated, but typically results will last three to six months. Botox has been rigorously tested since its aesthetic applications have been discovered and it is very safe and regular repeat treatments have not been found to cause long-term problems.
Mr Yousefpour will aim to produce a very natural result. You’ll still be able to show all the same expressions, but with less wrinkling of the skin in the treated areas.
